THE HYPOCRITES A PLAY IN FOUR ACTS
1906 · London
by Jones, Henry Arthur
London: Printed at the Chiswick Press, 1906. [8],96pp. Full limp vellum, stamped in gilt, silk ties (broken). Light dust soiling, but very good. Denoted as "privately printed and not for circulation," preceding both the 1907 private and the 1908 public editions cited in NCBEL. This copy is inscribed by the dramatist: "Dear Mrs. Eckert, With pleasant and grateful memories of your Naomi in 'The Galilean's Victory' and of your father's admirable stage management of ['] The Hypocrites.' I am always faithfully yours Henry Arthur Jones." The play premiered at the Hudson Theatre, NY, in 1906, prior to any British performance. The recipient was May Davenport Seymour, and her father, William Seymour, managed the production. An uncommon form of one the author's most noted later plays. NCBEL III:1165.
