THE BURNING OF SCHENECTADY, AND OTHER POEMS
1842 · Albany
by Street, Alfred B.
Albany: Weare C. Little, 1842. [6],63,[3],[3]-36pp. Octavo. Original glazed yellow boards. Modest foxing early and late, backstrip covering largely absent (but joints still sound), a few stray marks or spots on boards, bookplate neatly removed. Withal, a good copy. First edition of the author's first substantial book, preceded by a pamphlet poem published in 1840. The title poem of this collection is the poet/editor/lawyer/librarian's most famous work, and among the appended poems are several on hunting topics. Street "has been rated one of the first of the second-class American poets, and some of his works are deserving of a better fate than the oblivion into which they have fallen" - Kunitz & Haycraft.
