"Bookstores are filled with innumerable works of instruction for children, and parents anxiously resort to every method which will enable their offspring to become prodigies in mental endowments, while in every other respect they remain weak and delicate infants." Per the detailed description of the 1833 edition in the Atwater catalogue, a key work from an important figure in American treatment of mental illness; Brigham argues (in part) for letting children pursue education based on their imaginations and inclinations, increased physical education (especially for girls), and that ills such as heart disease and dyspepsia have roots in mental disorders.
