London: Faber and Faber. Very Good in Very Good dj. 1969. First Edition. Hardcover. 0-571-08759-0 . [quite a decent copy, spine turned, some shelfwear to bottom edge, light soiling to page edges; jacket shows some surface wear, light soiling to rear panel, very minor chipping at base of spine]. (B&W photographs, maps) Biography of the great mountaineer and all-around swell fellow (and possible first-conqueror of Everest, although the question is still debated), written by his son-in-law, who had access to all the family papers, and was thus able to follow his life "from boyhood in Cheshine and at Winchester, through years from 1905 to 1909 at Cambridge and the years of schoolmastering at Charterhouse, to a happy marriage, service in the First World War, and participation in the Everest Expeditions of the Twenties." It was on the last of the latter, in 1924, that he and his climbing partner disappeared; Mallory's frozen body was recovered 75 years later, and his exploits have been re-told and re-examined many times since, most recently by Sir Jeffrey Archer in his 2009 book "Paths of Glory." [NOTE that this copy of the book bears the following inscription on the ffep: "Robin & Elizabeth / from / David & Camille / March 1969." A previous owner (or seller) of the book added a pencil note below this: "Dedicated [sic] copy," but I have no evidence to support the conclusion that the "David" is the book's author; he was married at the time to Mallory's younger daughter Beridge (aka 'Berry'), so lacking further information, I think it's prudent to assume that this is a non-authorial inscription.] .
