A Sermon, Preached in the Audience of His Excellency Caleb Strong, Esq....on the Anniversary Election, May 28, 1806
by SHEPARD Samuel
Boston: Young & Minns, Printers to the State, 1806. . 8vo, disbound, fragments of original pamphlet binding present on spine; needle stab-holes. Stanford Library duplicate with numberical rubber-stamp and blind-stamp on final leaf Sabin 80195. Rather belligerent in tone, testifying to the importance of a militia: "A people who wish for peace, must be prepared for war." Forceful extortions to sobriety, temperance and frugality abound. "Intemperance and luxury debauch the mind, enfeeble the body, and degrade man to a level with the brute. They tend, of course, to the destruction of social happiness" (Inventory #: 329)
