Ida Randolph of Virginia A Poem in Three Cantos
by [HARLAN Caleb]
Philadelphia: Willis P. Hazard, 1860. . 8vo, dark green diced cloth; blind-stamped with rules and corner ornaments; title in gilt on front cover An absolutely stunning copy of the author's first book which was preceded by an 1855 pamphlet entitled "A Lecture on Allopathy and HomÏopathy."Harlan, born in Hilltown, Newcastle county, Delaware was probably the second practitioner of homÏopathy in Delaware. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1836, and practiced allopathy in Milltown. In 1846 his attention was called to the new medical system, and in 1847 he removed to Wilmington, where he began its practice. Being the first physician of the prevailing school to adopt homÏopathy, his action met with the most violent opposition from his former colleagues ; he was attacked in public debate and in the daily papers, but was well able to defend himself and the system. For several years he lectured on anatomy and physiology, hygiene and organic chemistry in the State Normal University at Wilmingto (Inventory #: 2790)
