Acts of the General Assembly, 11 [& 12] George III. With an Index.
by VIRGINIA. Laws, Etc. (Acts 1771-1772)
Williamsburg: Printed by William Rind. Printer to the Colony, 1772. . 2 volumes: [2] and 8 pp. and [2] and 51 pp. Folio in 2s, paper-covered boards, narrow leather backstrip; worn; contemporary ownership signature of Brightberry Brown on front pastedown; free endpapers lacking Berg 200 and 208; Evans 12265 and 12591. Acts in this format are extremely rare and are referred to as Òfugitive sheetsÓ or sessional laws they were printed up at the end of each session. Some of them were later collected into a codeÑone had been printed in 1769 and there was not another one done until 1785. Once collected into a code, many of the sessionals were discarded.Despite the wording of the title, there was never an index to the first publication which deals with the raising of public money to recompense tobacco farmers for crops burnt or lost at inspection warehousesÑa sum of £30,000 was authorized. The second title is the second issue of the 51 pp. edition with the correct date of 1772 in the imprint (Sabin 100278). Included is an act passed to build and maintain a lighthouse at Cape HenryÑa joint venture of the Maryland and Virginia Legislatures, and a rare example of these two Colonies cooperating.
