Hawkesworth, a misc. writer of the period, wrote only this one novel and many plays. It was originally written as a drama in three acts. Garrick was put off offering it because of the expense invloved in the staging. It was, however, finally performed as a play after being reworked by Pratt who used it as the basis for his Fair Circassian, preformed at the Drury Lane in 1781. Block, p. 99; DNB IX, 203-'05.
