London: J. Wilkie, 1771. First edition in English of the translation by N. B. Halhed, revised by R. B. B. Sheridan. pp. iii-xvi, 174 pp. Lacking half title and final ad leaf. 1 vols. 8vo. Three quarter burgundy morocco and marbled paper boards. Stain on title page through two following leaves, obscuring previous 19th-c. owner's signature, slight browning to margins of text. First edition in English of the translation by N. B. Halhed, revised by R. B. B. Sheridan. pp. iii-xvi, 174 pp. Lacking half title and final ad leaf. 1 vols. 8vo. Aristaenetus is the reputed author of two books of so-called Love Letters which were first edited by Sambucus (Antwerp, 1566). The present translations are generally short and mildly bawdy adventures, the result of a collaboration between Halhed and his friend from their Harrow days, the 20-year-old Richard Brinsley Sheridan. Presumably, Halhed, the Orientalist, provided the Greek translation, and Sheridan polished the verse. ESTC T133618 (Inventory #: 243915)
