Once widely believed not to have been a Borrow work, this translation from the Danish drama has been firmly re-established as his own, although it remains bibliographically confusing, as the book, while bearing the date of 1889 was actually published in 1892. In this copy the date has been removed by hand. Regarding this, Collie and Fraser note: "As for the existance of copies in which '1889' has been carefully erased from the titlepage...one can perhaps accept Carter and Pollard's suggestion that this was because the owner knew when the book appeared, rather than assume that Jarrolds may have eliminated the date on any remainders."
