First edition in parts. 11 consecutive issues of Harpers Monthly from February 1871 No. 249-November 1871 No. 258. 11 vols. 4to. De Mille, a Canadian (1837-1880), was a very popular writer of the period covering the last quarter of the nineteenth century. One of his best known works, "The Strange Manuscript Found in a Copper Cylinder," is rather reminiscent of Poe's "Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym", though certainly less grotesque. In addition to the De Mille novel, there are a number of other interesting articles on New York City and Long Island, including a very nicely illustrated piece on Montauk.
