HISTORIC DOUBTS RELATIVE TO NAPOLEON BUONAPARTE
1819 · London
by [ Whatley, Richard]
London: Printed for J. Hatchard, 1819. 48pp. Modern cloth, morocco label (bound with the half-title) Slight dust soiling and minor creasing, a few minor marginal nicks. Very good. The anonymously published first separate publication by the future Archbishop of Dublin and significant figure in the fields of logic and political economy. Written while Whately was pursuing his D.D. as a fellow of Oriel College, this reasoned tract attempts "to hoist Hume with his own petard by showing that on his principles the existence of Napoleon could not be admitted 'as a well-authenticated fact'" - DNB. It became exceedingly popular and passed through twelve editions during Whatley's lifetime. NCBEL III:1308. (Inventory #: WRCLIT20887)
