THE BROTHER VANE AND OTHER STORIES
first edition
1944 · London
by Landau, Rom[uald]
London: Faber and Faber, 1944. Octavo, original purple cloth stamped in gold. First edition. Landau was a Polish emigre who fought with the RAF in World War II, served in the Foreign Office as an Arabist, and eventually moved to California as an educator. He wrote extensively on religious and Arabic subjects. The present volume is his first work of fiction, collecting seven stories with settings and themes that reflect his experience. "The Brother Vane" and "Peter Isn't Paul" explore the idea of the double, or the other self. "The Bishop's Conversion" seems to have a supernatural angle. Not in Bleiler (1948; 1978) or Reginald (1979; 1992) or Day, Supplemental Checklist of Fantastic Literature. 1946 gift inscription on front free endpaper. A bright, near fine copy in very good dust jacket with shelf wear at edges. (#117554) (Inventory #: 117554)
