HISTORICAL MINIATURES. Translated by Claud Field
first edition
1913 · London
by Strindberg, August
London: George Allen & Company, 1913. Octavo, original light blue cloth. First edition in English. Collection of twenty-two short historical fictions, from Pharaonic Egypt to the French Revolution, plus an excerpt (translated) from a Swedish newspaper about the author's death the previous year. "Strindberg is remembered today mainly for his plays (such as 'Miss Julie' and 'The Ghost Sonata') but he wrote both fiction and nonfiction voluminously: his collected works in Swedish fill fifty-five volumes. A prototype of the tormented genius, his life twisted by poverty, alcoholism, insanity and romantic misery, he joins Ibsen and Ingmar Bergman to form a trio of Swedes, who like some Norse giants of old, knew the secret to trapping volcanic energies inside containers with a cold bleak surface." - Robert Eldridge. Endpapers and edges of text block tanned, some rubbing to cloth along outer joints, spine panel a bit darkened, a very good copy. (#113150) (Inventory #: 113150)
