THE OGHA MOR OR THE TALE-MAN ON HIS ELBOW ... With Introduction by Neil Munro
first edition
1924 · Glasgow and London
by Robertson, Angus
Glasgow and London: Gowans & Gray, 1924. Octavo, original green bevel-edged cloth. First edition in English. A presentation copy with inscription by Robertson ("from the author") dated June 1925 on front free endpaper. An English version of the Gaelic original made by Robertson, based on a translation made by the Rev. A. Mackinnon. The Gaelic original was published in Glasgow in 1913 as AN T-OGHA MOR: NO, AM FEAR-SGEOIL AIR UILINN as by "Aonghas Mac Dhonnachaidh." One critic referred to the author's style as "extremely forcible and compressed -- almost elliptical...."; while another cited its "almost morbid Meredithian avoidance of the obvious in phrase." There is not much in the way of the supernatural here other than the brooding presence of fate. Cloth rubbed at spine ends and corner tips, hairline cracks along inner hinges due the method of binding, not abuse, else a very good copy. (#115680) (Inventory #: 115680)
