[BAL State A, with the illustrations present]. Signed presentation from Holmes on the front endpaper, to his close friend and Harvard classmate Benjamin Robbins Curtis: "B.R. Curtis/ from his friend and classmate/ O.W. Holmes." Curtis, who went on to the U.S. Supreme Court, is best known for his dissenting opinion in the infamous Dred Scott Case, a case which eventually led to his resignation from the nation's high court.
