One page handwritten letter on Harvard University letterhead (while Shaler was the Dean), dated July 19, 1902. A quite difficult to read letter, signed N. S. Shaler. Nathaniel Southgate Shaler was an American paleontologist and geologist who wrote extensively on the theological and scientific implications of the theory of evolution. He studied at Harvard under Louis Agassiz and would go on to become a Harvard lecturer and professor of paleontology for two decades (1869-1888) and as professor of geology for nearly two more decades (1888-1906). Shaler served for two years during the Civil War as Captain of Artillery (5th Kentucky Battery) in the Federal Army.. (Inventory #: 011707)
