Folding map frontispiece in each volume. Fascinating account of the author's journey in the Levant. There, Newton was vice-consul between 1852 and 1859 and lead the British government's expedition to Asia Minor in 1856, where the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, was excavated. He became a curator at the British Museum in 1861. This work is beautifully illustrated with 41 plates and maps (including 2 frontispieces), some tinted plates, some double-page and folding, 9 folding maps/plans, 38 other illustrations. Modern binding. Both half title-pages slightly soiled, and partly chipped on volume I. 2" closed tear on frontispiece of first volume. Very minor foxing or soiling on few plates. Text in English. Overall, binding and interior in very good condition.
