Contemporary leather with embossed gilt decoration and title plate ["Histoire des Juifs "] Modern (19th century) marbled endpapers. Magnificently illustrated with over 200 in-text copper engravings throughout the book. Contains: - Histoire des Juifs (Jewish Antiquities) - La vie de Joseph. Ecrite par luy-meme (Autobiography) -Histoire de la guerre des Juifs (Jewish wars) Missing is "Contra Apionem". Specifics of this edition (quoted from Schreckenberg (see below), p. 25/6): -first published in 1667 (Paris: Pierre le Petit). Later Paris editions in 1668, 1670, 1676. -this is the first Amsterdam-edition. According to Brunet (see below), the earlier editions were illustrated with vignettes only. This is the first edition with copper plate engravings. Further Amsterdam-editions were published by different publishers: Mortier (1700), Schelte (1703) -Arnauld d'Andilly was the first person to translate Flavius Josephus from the Greek into French. He finished the translation at the age of 21. (His father, Joachim Gillet later published a different translation of Josephus) -Engravings of Biblical scenes and the Bar-Kochba-revolt. Text in French (translated from the Greek). Hinges starting. Browning throughout. Marginal stain to top edge, not affecting text or images, pages 466-591.
