Paper on the portrait of Benjamin Franklin painted from life by Benjamin Wilson in 1759. This portrait was taken from Franklin's home in Philadelphia, in July 1778, by Major Andre during the British occupation of the city. In April 1906, it was returned to the United States from England by Earl Grey, who was appointed Governor General of Canada, who presented it as a gift to the White House. Today, it hangs in the White House Treaty Room, the Presidential study on the second floor. Reprinted from the Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography, October, 1906. Frontispiece portrait with protective tissue guard. Original brown wrappers, slightly chipped and separating along spine, small chips at corners and fore-edges.
