Also includes a description of St. Peter's Church by Professor Charles D. Vail, originally written for the Geneva Gazette in 1870. Illustrated with numerous full-page photographic portraits (including one of Bishop De Lancey) and a photograph of the church. Rev. William Heathcote De Lancey (1797–1865) was a professor of moral philosophy and served as Provost of the University of Pennsylvania from 1828 until 1834. During his tenure, the University showed some improvement in enrollment and in other areas. In 1839, he was elected first Bishop of the Western New York diocese of the Episcopal Church and later became one of the first American bishops to be recognized by the Church of England. Original wrappers, front and back covers with one tear (about 2"–3" long) each. The full title is neatly written in ink on the front wrapper. Internally clean. (Inventory #: 9338)
