Includes the title-page and ten verses of the first chapter of Genesis copied from "Eliot's Indian Bible" and printed in red ink on two leaves. Illustrated with a frontispiece of the proposed monument bearing the words "Eliot the Apostle to the Indians." John Eliot (1604–1690) completed a version of the whole Bible in the dialect of the Massachusetts Indians in 1658. According to the DNB, "Samuel Green, successor to Stephen Daye, was the first printer, and was afterwards helped by Marmaduke Johnson...[In] 1661, the New Testament was completed, and a copy sent by the commissioners to Charles II and others. Two years later the whole Bible was completed, being the first ever printed on the American continent.
