The villa was constructed at Tibur (modern-day Tivoli) in the early 2nd century as a retreat for Roman Emperor Hadrian. It was a complex of over 30 buildings, covering an area of circa 250 acres of which much is still unexcavated. The grounds were one of the greatest Roman example of an Alexandrian garden, and included palaces, temples, libraries, several thermae, state rooms, a theatre, and quarters for courtiers, praetorians and slaves. After Hadrian, the villa was used by his various successors. During the decline of the Roman Empire it fell into disuse and was partially ruined. Profusely illustrated with color and b/w reproductions of photographs by Daniele Amoni. Text in Italian. Minor scuffing on slipcase. Tight copy in near fine condition. (Inventory #: 26159)
