Expertly and attractively rebound in tan/olive colored cloth with a leather spine label by Scott Kellar in Chicago. Illustrated by a frontis and 60 plates on 20 pages. Minor paper repair to page 185. Previous owner's bookplate removed from old binding and affixed to new front pastedown endpaper. Contains autograph: Frederic Harrison Westbourne Terrace 1882; on front endpaper. Harrison (1831-1923) was a Positivist, Social Reformer and author of works on William Gladstone, Ruskin, Law, etc. He is known for the 1871 Trade Union Act. The Panchatantra was a 6th Century Sanskrit collection of animal fables, folk tales, and other stories complied by an Indian scholar for the edification of the young sons of a king. An early Pahlavi translation of these tales was known as Kalilah and Damnag. In later translations into European languages these tales became known as the Fables of Bilpai..
