JUDAEA CAPTA. By Charlotte Elizabeth
first edition
1845 · New York
by Elizabeth, Charlotte (Charlotte Elizabeth [Browne] Tonna)
New York: Published by John S. Taylor & Co., 1845. 12mo, original decorated black cloth stamped in gold and blind. First (or early) U.S. edition. Neither COPAC nor OCLC lists a UK edition of this book published before 1845, nor do they list a U.S. edition published prior to 1845. However, there were several U.S. editions dated 1845, of which this is one. This historical sketch of the siege and destruction of Jerusalem by the Romans is part of a uniform multi-volume edition of Mrs. Tonna's books published by Taylor & Co. Includes a 32 page catalogue of publisher's advertisements, mostly for Charlotte Elizabeth's books, ending with three reviews of the present volume. A three page newspaper obituary of the author is pasted to two blank pages (pages [223-224]) and over the first page of the publisher's catalogue. Allibone says that "she published many religious books and a number of tracts, -- widely circulated and very useful ..." She also wrote a considerable body of didactic fiction, including HELEN FLEETWOOD (1841), a early social problem novel dealing with factory life. Some foxing to endpapers, cloth lightly rubbed, a very good copy with bright gold spine stamping. (#132047) (Inventory #: 132047)
