by ORTIZ-VARGAS, A.
1939. ORTIZ-VARGAS, A. LAS TORRES DE MANHATTAN. Boston: Chapman & Grimes, [1939]. 8vo., black boards stamped in silver. First Edition. Signed presentation from Vargas on the front endpaper: "Para Miss Augusta D. Crawley cordial recuerdo a A. Ortiz Vargas. Newburyport Abril 23. 1940." Ortiz-Vargas was assistant professor of foreign literature at the University of Kansas City in 1951 when he was gunned down by a disgruntled laundry worker along with an elderly black woman. Ortiz-Vargas had an ownership in the laundry and there was a quarrel over financial matters. An original newspaper clipping about the murder is laid in. Good (an ex-library copy from California Western University's Ryan Library- with the usual stamping and some abrasion to the front pastedown from lending pocket removed). Uncommon to locate any signed copies of Ortiz-Vargas other than "The Towers of Manhattan." $125.00.
