Carlyle (1722-1805) was a Church of Scotland minister, memorialist, and political commentator who spoke and wrote against the American colonists seeking independence. He left his autobiography complete but unpublished and it fell to John Hill Burton (1809-1881) to see it through the press. First American edition.
