Softbound
1947 · Boston
by Helm, MacKinley and Frederick S. Wight
Boston: Institute of Modern Art, 1947. Softbound. VG. Stiff BW pictorial wraps. 41 + [36] pp. 2 color, 38 bw plates. Issued in conjunction with a series of 1947 exhibitions of artwork by early American modernist John Marin (1870-1953). Includes essays by Frederick S. Wight (Pertaining To Marin's Style), and MacKinley Helm (John Marin: A Portrait). Also includes a two-page artist's statement and bibliography. The catalogue cites 19 oils, 45 watercolors, 22+ drawings, 12 etchings; and many are pictured here. What is amazing is that this exhibition was derived entirely from material by Marin that was stockpiled by Stieglitz and never offered for public sale. (Inventory #: 5870)
