1744. · Boston:
by Erskine, Ebenezer.
8vo, 2 volumes in one, earl sheep with spine label, [1], iv, [2], 346 (page 346 incorrectly numbered 344; complete); [1], 349-688 pp. Binding worn, and hinges are a little weak, but still firm, one signature sprung, tape repairs to tile with minor loss, owners inscriptions on front free endpaper, and back of second title page, scattered foxing and staining, pages appear to be trimmed, but with no loss; otherwise a good copy. Erskine (1680-1754) was the founder of the Secession Church in Scotland. His father was a minister who was ejected for nonconformity in 1662, but Ebenezer still managed to graduate from Edinburgh University in 1697. Ebenezer and his brother Ralph were very popular preachers in 18th century Scotland. According to contemporary sources, thousands would come to hear Ebenezer preach, and he was considered a pioneer in the use of illustrations in sermons. He was also something of a controversial figure, and was rebuked by the church synod and assembly, which led to his suspension in 1733. This appeared to have limited impact, since he continued to administer to a large congregation in the years ahead. DNB. puritansermons website. Evans 5388. (Inventory #: 100951)
