The Fairchild Tropical Garden, Coconut Grove, Florida, Catalog of Plants Growing in the Garden.
19491950 · Coral Gables, FL
by Phillips, William Lyman.
Coral Gables, FL: Kells Press, 1949. Revised and Extended 1950. Octavo, paperbound (stiff, green, stapled wrappers), 51 pp. Very Good, with darkened edges, small former owner signature, and light edgewear. From Foreword: The plants listed in this catalog are, in the main, exotics that have been established in the Fairchild Tropical Garden. A few native species have persisted conspicuously -- live oak, cabbage palm, mangrove, etc., and are included in the catalog with other natives that have been planted to extend the representation of family groups. The list of some 1090 species in 469 genera gives a fairly comprehensive idea of the possibilites of outdoor cultivation in the Miami area, though consideration must always be given to local climatic or soil conditions which are often less favorable than at the Garden. The latin binomials are those currently accepted....Common names have been noted wherever any could be found, and a separate Index of these has been provided. The recommendations of Standardized Plant Names have been followed here for the most part. In some instances local usage has been given preference, e.g. Royal Poinciana rather than Flamboyanttree. A large portion of these tropical plants have no common English names... (Inventory #: ess4544)
