by Cooke, Jack [Boy Evangelist whose given name was Claud Hanbury Cooke]
n.p., 1905. Hardcover. Very Good. Unique item. Bound volume containing 22 printed petitions with the holograph signatures of about 1200 British individuals imploring Cooke to return to England to conduct a Second Evangelistic Campaign. Contemporary 1/2 leather. 32 cm. Binding has some scuffing and other wear but is generally sound. Some petitions have some soiling and wear. Laid in is a small 15-page pamphlet titled "Life of Jack Cooke, the Famous Boy Preacher which as written by his father Henry Cooke and published circa 1899. Cooke was a sensation as a boy evangelist. One finds quite a bit about him on the internet. He seems to have first appeared on the scene in 1897 and quickly became a sensation. We suspect that growing up ended his time in the religious spotlight. In any event, we found nothing online about any later career. There were a couple of entries about someone with his unusual given name receiving Bachelor's and Master's degrees in 1910 and 1912, respectively, from Princeton.
