2” x 2”, 1981. Group of 18 original 35mm color slides of Audrey Hepburn from the film They All Laughed, signed by the author / director Peter Bogdanovich on the lid of the slide box. In addition to Bogdanovich’s signature, the box is labeled in an unknown hand: “Audrey Hepburn, ‘They All Laughed’ 35mm Dupes.” All of the slides are of the same image. The film was directed by Peter Bogdanovich, with a screenplay by Bogdanovich and Blaine Novak, and starred Audrey Hepburn, Ben Gazzara, Patti Hansen, John Ritter, Dorothy Stratten, and Blaine Novak. The image is of Audrey Hepburn in character as Angela Niotes, the wife of a wealthy and jealous Italian industrialist who hires a detective (Gazzara) to follow her, never imagining that the detective would fall for her himself. The slide shows Miss Hepburn standing on the sidewalk of a busy Manhattan street, wearing sunglasses and a stylish brown jacket. All slides are in fine condition. The film was released after the murder of Dorothy Stratten, the lovely Playboy Playmate of the Year (1980), with whom Bogdanovich fell in love during filming. As a result of this tragedy, no major studio would release the film, and Peter Bogdanovich spent five million dollars of his own money to distribute the it himself. They All Laughed was Audrey Hepburn’s last starring role in a feature film. (Inventory #: 19839E)
