Gray who managed Field's father's estate on behalf of Field who was considered by his family and contemporaries a spendthrift. Inscription reads: "To Melvin L. Gray, In recognition of the debt, I must always owe for favors and assistance in the making of this study of his eccentric and even lovable ward.
