Mansfield was known primarily for his work as the chemist who developed a process for extracting benzol from coal-tar (thereby laying the foundation for the aniline industry), as well as for his publication 'Theory of Salts', which is viewed as his most important contribution to theoretical chemistry. Mansfield's scientific orientation is notable in the perspective & approach displayed in this work where he devotes much thought & consideration to motive & powered aerial navigation, as [then] current LTA efforts were subject to the whims of nature as they had been (for the most part), ever since Montgolfier. This publication (along with all of his other works), though written in the early 1850s, was issued posthumously, Mansfield having died prematurely at the young age of 36 from burns suffered during a laboratory accident. The DNB describes this title as "one of the most striking and suggestive works on its subject."
