first edition Full Leather
1803 · Philadelphia
by [John Beale Bordley]
Philadelphia: James Humphreys, 1803. First American Edition. Full Leather. Very Good binding. The First American printing of Bordley's GLEANINGS, which was first published in London 1799 and then republished with additional notes in 1801. While the book mostly regurgitates English authorities, it is still a significant examble of early American agricultural publishing as it is"[i]nterspersed with REMARKS and OBSERVATIONS by a Gentleman of Philadelphia." This gentleman, John Bordley, was instrumental in the formation of the Philadelphia Society for Promoting Agriculture, and practically ran an experimental farm on his extensive property on Wye Island. (Shaw & Shoemaker, 4284). Very Good binding. (Inventory #: 259023)
