Born in 1752 on the western frontier of Massachusetts, grandson of Jonathan Edwards, Dwight became a minister, and eventually, in 1794, the president of Yale. He began in 1796 to spend his summer vacations traveling through New England, describing in long letters the people, customs, topography, and industry of the areas he visited.
