Francis Parkman (1823-1893), most famously known for his work "The Oregon Trail" (1849), took up horticulture as a result of poor health; his success in the field would eventually lead to his election as president of the Massachusetts Horticultural Society and as professor of horticulture at Harvard in 1871.
