James Laver (1899-1975), in a widely varied career, won the Newdigate prize for verse at Oxford in 1921, wrote Nostradamus or The Future Foretold (1942), Taste & Fashion, A History of English Costume (1937), books on 19th century French art, and was Keeper of the Victoria and Albert museum for almost forty years.
