Woodcut vignette on title page of Roman soldiers slaying infants in their mothers' arms. Bound in contemporary stiff vellum, soiled. Worm trails on pastedowns and final blanks. Marino's mannerist style dominated Italian poetry through the 17th century. The date of this edition of "The Massacre of the Innocents" is postulated on the period that the publisher, Remondini, was active in Bassano. The British Library's suggestion of 1690 is possible, but our owner's inscription of 1724 clearly disproves the Vinciana proposal of 1753. Text includes Canto VII of Marino's unfinished "Della Gerusalemme distrutta" and "Poesie sacre e morale. (Inventory #: 4086)
