Based on William Boyd's 1984 novel, about British art scholar Henderson Dores (Lewis), who is sent to rural Georgia to purchase a painting by Renoir. The owner of the painting, hillbilly Loomis Gage (Stanton), claims he bought the painting for $500 in France in 1946. Dores offers ten million, but Gage's scheming son has already promised the painting to an art dealer for fifteen million.
