First Edition, Presentation/Association Copy of this seminal work on industrial efficiency, with Typed Letter SIGNED by Frank Gilbreth tipped in at front endpage, under his company's letterhead stationery. Dated June 7/11 (1911) and addressed to Adelaide R. Hasse, Dept. of Documents, NY Public Library, as follows -"My dear Miss Hasse, I have ordered my Publishers, Messrs. D. Van Nostrand Co., to send you, with my compliments, a copy of "Motion Study" which I hope you will find interesting. I have told Mrs. Gilbreth about the remarkable work that you are doing and she expresses the wish of meeting you at an early date. I remain very truly, Frank Gilbreth." The front paste down has two bookplates "With the Compliments of the Author" and "Presented by D. Van Nostrand Company, Publishers and Booksellers New York". Of additional Association interest, the book plate of John F. Mee front end page under the TLS. Mee was former chairman of the Dept. of Management at the Indiana Univ. School of Business, an authority on the changing concepts of management and a pioneer of management education. The recipient, Adelaide R. Hasse, is credited with having developed the Superintendent of Documents Classification system used by the Govt. Printing Office and the Federal Depositiry Library Program. In her 54 year career she was an advocate of "efficient and effective" library services, public access to government materials, and the women's movement. Frank Gilbreth, along with his wife Lillian, are best known from the book and movies "Cheaper by the Dozen". However, together they pioneered the field of scientific management and industrial efficiency. Given Miss Hasse's work in "efficient and effective" library services, this Presentation Copy establishes a most desirable and interesting Associaition between two of the towering figures in their field. Very Good in the original green cloth with gilt titles, cloth rubbed at the spine tips, gilt lettering on spine a bit dulled, small dampstain top edge of page block at spine.
