This piece consists of excerpts from chapters 30-36 of Cabeza de Vaca's La Relación (first published in Madrid, 1542) in an 1851 translation by Thomas Buckingham Smith (1810-1871). La Relación tells of Cabeza de Vaca's adventures during eight years of travel with the Narvaez expedition in the Southwest of the current United States in the 16th century.
