In the late 1860s, a group of artists living in Pittsburgh traveled to an area near Johnstown, Pennsylvania (Scalp Level) to sketch. This group influenced the artistic direction and life of communities throughout the state and provided an important cultural dimension for the developing city of Pittsburgh. Members of the group were influencial in the founding of the Pittsburgh School of Design, The Carnegie Institute and The Carnegie International Exhibition. Two patrons (and friends) of the artists were Henry Clay Frick and Andrew Carnegie. (Inventory #: 141620)
