The Great War. A Neutral's Indictment
Half Decorated Cloth. Marbled Paper.
1916 · London
by Raemaekers, Louis (1869-1956)
London: The Fine Art Society, 1916. Half Decorated Cloth. Marbled Paper.. Fine. A near flawless copy of a spectacular collection of wartime illustration. Large folio, 46 by 36 cm. xxx pp, followed by the illustraitons. Raemaeker was a Dutch painter and cartoonist especially remembered for his trenchant anti-German cartoons drawn during the First World War. This volume is one of three of his collected works; it nonetheless stands on its own very well. Each of the mounted plates has a long caption and description on the facing page, which is also the verso of the preceding plate leaf (excepting the frontis plate). The descriptions are arranged in chronological order and thus serve well as a loose, albeit highly biased, account of the war. Most of the plates have color, with a few that are lithos of chalk or ink drawings. (Inventory #: 003303)
