first editionContemporary panelled calf with gilt brown morocco spine label, edges sprinkled red.
Cambridge: Typis Academicis, 1716 First edition of the Zachary Pearce edition of Cicero's De Oratore. . Contemporary panelled calf with gilt brown morocco spine label, edges sprinkled red. . Octavo. One worn spot on front cover. Otherwise a fine, crisp copy. Pearce (1690-1774), a follower of the great classical scholar Richard Bentley, who later became bishop of Rochester, wrote several respected theological works, but is as much remembered for his scholarly editions, including translations of Cicero's De officiis (1745) and of Longinus's De sublimitate (1724). This, his first book, went through many editions, though the first is surprisingly scarce: ESTC lists only three copies in North America (Illinois, Ohio State, Dalhousie). (Inventory #: 13215)
