The author (1774-1851) was a Wesleyan Methodist preacher and schoolmaster from the Southampton area of Hampshire. He took an active interest in the activities of the gypsies at New Forest, whom he often entertained at his home. He also sought to bring knowledge of the Gypsies to a wider audience.
