Amsterdam: 1755 First edition. Contemporary mottled calf. Gilt-decorated spines with brown morocco labels, gilt triple-ruled borders on covers, marbled edges and endpapers. Three volumes in one, twelvemo. Corners lightly worn, some joints just starting to crack. A very good, tight set. The first two volumes are an analysis of Francis Bacon's philosophy by Alexandre Deleyre (1726-1797), a Jesuit associate of Diderot's and Rousseau's, who became one of the editors of the Encyclopédie. Deleyre's study was highly regarded in its day, and was reprinted in 1778 and 1804. The third volume contains the French translation of David Mallet's (1705?-1765) Life of Francis Bacon, which was originally prefixed to the 1740 four-volume edition of Bacon's works.
