Halkett & Laing (2nd ed.), II,366 attributes the Gentleman in black to either James Dalton or J.Y. Akerman; Wolff attributes it to James Dalton, author of The Robber (1832), The Maiden's Talisman (1834), and The Rival Demons (1836). (Inventory #: 7863)
