He immigrated with his family from Scotland to the US in 1854 and set up business buying surplus goods from navy stores and auctions. He would become one of the largest militaria dealers in the world and his store at 501 Broadway in New York City would take an entire city block. Bannerman began publishing his catalog sometime in the 1870 and it was printed regularly until the 1960s. It had everything in it - from uniforms to weapons and from knapsacks to gun parts and appendages. (Inventory #: 001645)
