New York/London: D. Appleton-Century Company. Very Good. 1934. First Edition. Hardcover. (pictorial cloth; no dust jacket) [solid copy, faint spotting on covers, very slight bumping/fraying at several corners, uneven dust-soiling to top edge, rear fep torn out]. Set mostly during the 1920s, this novel tells the story of the three Shaw brothers, who live across the street from the amusement park where their father was killed (during construction of its dance pavilion), and find themselves inexorably drawn into its "garish, gaudy life." Their neurotic mother, meanwhile, believes the park to be "a dread monster which will take away her sons as it has her husband." (Quotes are from the dust jacket, not present on this copy of the book.) The author, whose first novel this was, was the son of "Uncle Wiggly" creator Howard R. Garis. . (Inventory #: 15199)
